Talks

Recordings from the TEDxYorkUSalon stages, including the 2017 “AutismInnovations” salon held on April 22, 2017 at Glendon Theatre, Toronto.

The TEDxYorkUSalon video archive gathers recordings of talks delivered on the salon stages, preserving ideas that were otherwise heard only once in a single evening. Speakers step onto the stage, share work tied to their fields, and hand the audience a compact set of takeaways that can travel far beyond the room. Watching these recordings later is a way to revisit the questions that surfaced, and to hear perspectives that the live audience might not have had time to absorb. The archive treats the talks as a growing library rather than a one-off event, extending the salon's reach to viewers who joined the conversation online or after the fact.

The 2017 salon, AutismInnovations, was held at Glendon Theatre in Toronto on April 22, 2017, and centred on innovations for people with autism within their community and within research. Presenters and researchers took turns on stage, each offering a portion of the picture: how care is delivered, where treatment decisions are made, and how ideas move between institutions and community practice. The session format paired shorter speaking slots with interactive breaks, letting audiences respond and ask questions rather than simply applaud. A snapshot of the day's material continues to be shared through the event's recordings.

The earlier salon, Spectrum, took place on May 28, 2016, and looked at concerns relevant to transition-age youth and adults with autism. That framing placed the focus on a period of life marked by change, from education into work, from family support into independent living, and on the barriers that arise along the way. Speakers from across the Greater Toronto Area and beyond addressed the practical realities of support systems and the innovations emerging in response. The second salon built on that foundation, narrowing the lens in 2017 while keeping the same commitment to hosting a forum where researchers, practitioners, and community members meet on shared ground.

Both salon recordings are organised as YouTube playlists, one for each year of the programme, so viewers can move through a full evening's worth of material in sequence or pick out individual talks. Each video carries the salon branding and runs long enough to hold a complete presentation, including light editing between segments and moments of audience reaction. The playlists function as a curated shelf: a set of short, focused contributions that together sketch out a field, in this case autism research, treatment, care, and community innovation. Between them, the two collections offer an informal record of what was said on stage and a resource for anyone working in the same area.
